چکیده

Three-dimensional near-field high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy has been used to observe the formation of new twinned grains in high purity Ni during annealing at 800 !C. In the fully recrystallized microstructure annealed at 800 !C, twinned grains form along triple lines. Both the grain boundary character and the grain boundary dihedral angles were measured before and after the twin formed. These measurements make it possible to show that although each new twinned grain increases the total grain boundary area, it reduces the total grain boundary energy. " 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Evolution of the Annealing Twin Density during -Supersolvus Grain Growth in the Nickel-Based Superalloy InconelTM 718

Grain growth experiments were performed on InconelTM 718 to investigate the possible correlation of the annealing twin density with grain size and with annealing temperature. Those experiments were conducted at different temperatures in the supersolvus domain and under such conditions that only capillarity forces were involved in the grain boundary migration process. In the investigated range, ...

Thermo-mechanical factors influencing annealing twin development in nickel during recrystallization

The effects of prior stored energy level, annealing temperature, heating velocity, and initial grain size on annealing twin development during static recrystallization of commercially pure nickel (99.999 %) are investigated. The twin content (measured as the twin boundary density or as the number of twins per grain) at the end of recrystallization is shown to be primarily influenced by the prio...

Nucleation and Growth of Twin Interfaces in Fcc Metals and Alloys

Presence of coherent interfaces within crystallites, referred to as «annealing twins,» has many effects on the properties of several fcc metals and alloys. The mechanism of the formation of these twins have been subject of numerous studies over fifty years. Although much progress has been made in recent years, a universally accepted view on the formation of these twins has not yet emerged. This...

Individual effect of recrystallisation nucleation sites on texture weakening in a magnesium alloy: Part 2- shear bands

The entire recrystallisation process of a cold-rolled WE43 Mg alloy containing a high density of shear bands was tracked using a quasi-in-situ electron backscatter diffraction method. The results showed the resultant recrystallised texture arose principally from recrystallisation within shear bands rather than from deformation twins, which made a negligible contribution to the final texture. On...

Observation of atomic diffusion at twin-modified grain boundaries in copper.

Grain boundaries affect the migration of atoms and electrons in polycrystalline solids, thus influencing many of the mechanical and electrical properties. By introducing nanometer-scale twin defects into copper grains, we show that we can change the grain-boundary structure and atomic-diffusion behavior along the boundary. Using in situ ultrahigh-vacuum and high-resolution transmission electron...
